3bits RED DSMC2 Native Nato Rail
Overview:
The 3bits Native Nato rail mount attaches seamlessly to the back of a RED DSMC2 body, providing a secure platform for Nato accessory. It also features two 1/4-inch threads and one 3/8-inch thread with locking pins, allowing for additional accessory mounting.
Designed specifically to match the edges of the DSMC2, the mount sits flush against the camera body.
Design:
This design was a bit of an ad-hoc project. With DSMC2 bodies becoming more affordable, I picked one up for filming product shots and videos. As anyone quickly learns, rigging out a camera is an art in itself. I was never a fan of top handles that sit too close to the screen, so I thought—why not add a NATO attachment to the rear of the body? This would allow for a larger handle with better screen clearance. And so, this mount was born.
Fortunately, both RED and ARRI publish schematics based on best engineering practices, all of which have been strictly followed.
Features:
2 x 1/4 inch threaded holes
1 × 3/8 inch threaded centrehole with ARRI locking pin slots.
Steel Helicoil Inserts: These match those found on RED bodies and many ARRI accessories, providing long hardwearing and tough bolt fixtures.
Optimised for Half-Cap Bolts: By utilising lower-capped bolts the design maintains wall geometry for strength while achieving a sleek profile with the lowest possible stack height, adhering to NATO standards.
Materials: Machined from 7075 T6 aerospace-grade aluminium and anodised black.
This marks our first foray into CNC machining and metalwork, and I’m incredibly proud of the result. That said, it’s not without its quirks. The design is sharp—literally. The default bevel isn’t as rounded as expected, making the edges sharper than intended. While this isn't an issue once mounted, some caution is advised. On the upside, it allows the part to sit seamlessly when attached.
